  About Ranikhet Sightseeing

Binsar Mahadev Temple
Binsar Mahadev temple is situated at an altitude of 2,480 meters ASL. It is about 22 km from Thalisain. Binsar Mahadev temple is famous for its archeological significance, being an ancient construction of 9th century. It is believed to be constructed in just one day. Though the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the sanctum also houses idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddesses Parvati and Durga.

Katarmal Sun Temple
Katarmal is a 800-year old Sun Temple and is the second in importance after the Sun Temple of Konark in Orissa. The deity of the sun temple in Katarmal is known as Burhadita or Vraddhaditya (the old Sun God). The temple, noted for its magnificent architecture, artistically made stone and metallic sculptures and beautifully carved pillars and wooden doors, has a cluster of 44 small, exquisitely carved temples surrounding it.

Situated at an altitude of 3870 meters in the Syahi Devi hill Sitlakhet is another gem in Kumaon. It is a short drive away from Almora & provides stunning view of the snow capped mountains. There is a KMVN tourist lodge and a raj style forest bungalow complete with fire place and easy chairs. You can simply take out an easy chair to the front lawn & gaze at the mountains whole day basking in the Sun. In the afternoon take a walk in the reserve forest just behind the bungalow. We have seen foxes there. I was told that a resort has come up near here & I am really disappointed. This place was once my escape to complete peace & seclusion.

Dwarahat lies at a distance of 32 km from Ranikhet on the way to Karnaprayag. This small town is home to a group of 55 ancient temples, tucked into the mountainside. The temples, whose presence was forgotten for a long while, were built by the Katyuri kings. At one time, they were renowned for their beautiful architecture and the temple design hews closely to the motifs in the Gurjari school of art.

Dwarahat lies in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand and like the region itself, is surrounded by thick green forests and gently rolling hills. The region seems to have been a pilgrimage hub of sorts in the past. Just 20 km away from Dwarahat lies the Maa Doonagiri Temple. Legend holds it that the mountain on which the temple stands was brought to the region by Lord Hanuman.

Khoont, a small village known for being the ancestral village of the great freedom fighter - Govind Vallabh Pant, is approximately 30 km from Ranikhet. If you are in search of some threads associated with the freedom struggle,Khoont would be surely worth a visit

The scenic hamlet on the way to Ramghar from Ranikhet, Tarikhet is known for its role in the Indian independence Movement. The main attraction is the Gandhi Kuti, where Mahatma Gandhi once stayed during the freedom struggle. The contribution of this scenic village to the freedom struggle is marked. At this beautiful place, it seems as time has stopped. The old world rustic charm, peaceful and leisurely atmosphere is relaxing. Another attraction is the Golu Devta Temple where thousands of devotees come to pray every year.
